BOPP Laminated vs Plain PP Woven Bags: A Buyer’s Guide

Three custom printed handle bags for rice and grain packaging

The short answer is that BOPP laminated PP woven bags are usually considered when detailed graphics and a retail-facing surface matter, while plain PP woven bags are often considered when a simpler woven sack is sufficient. Neither construction is automatically better for every product. The correct choice depends on the packed product, required protection, filling method, closure, distribution route, artwork, and local packaging rules.

This guide explains the questions a buyer should resolve before requesting a custom bag quotation from PINGYANG GRACE INTERNATIONAL TRADE CO., LTD.

Quick comparison

  • Surface and print: BOPP film can support detailed printed presentation. Plain woven printing is typically more direct and visually simpler.
  • Product protection: Lamination changes the surface structure, but required barrier performance must still be specified and tested. A plain woven bag’s protection depends on the construction and any coating or liner.
  • Construction: A BOPP laminated bag combines a woven PP substrate with a BOPP film layer. A plain PP woven bag does not use that BOPP print film.
  • Filling and closure: Both options must be designed around the filling line, opening, seam, valve or other closure.
  • Recycling assessment: In both cases, evaluate the complete structure, inks, adhesives, coatings, liners, closures and local collection route.
  • Best starting point: BOPP lamination can suit brand-led or shelf-facing projects. Plain woven construction can suit projects where straightforward identification and functional handling are the main priorities.

This table is a starting point, not a specification. Two bags with similar names can perform differently because fabric construction, coating, liner, seam, dimensions, packed product and test method differ.

What is a BOPP laminated PP woven bag?

A BOPP laminated PP woven bag combines a woven polypropylene substrate with a printed biaxially oriented polypropylene film. The woven body provides the structural base, while the outer film provides a smooth surface for detailed graphics and branding.

Buyers should still define the whole construction. “BOPP laminated” alone does not specify the bag’s dimensions, fabric construction, liner, opening, closure, printing coverage or finished performance.

What is a plain PP woven bag?

A plain PP woven bag uses woven polypropylene as its principal visible body without the BOPP print film used on the laminated alternative. It may still include printing, a coating, a liner, a particular seam or another application-specific feature.

Plain does not mean unengineered. The bag still has to match the product, target fill weight, filling equipment, handling conditions and closure method.

1. Start with the packed product—not the artwork

Before comparing appearance, document what the bag must contain. Useful information includes:

  • product name and whether it is powder, granule, flake or another form;
  • target net fill weight;
  • sensitivity to moisture, contamination, light or odour;
  • food-contact or other regulatory requirements, where applicable;
  • dust, leakage or sift-resistance concerns;
  • storage time and expected temperature or humidity conditions.

A printed film does not automatically create the barrier needed for every product. If moisture or contamination control is critical, discuss the required performance and whether a liner or another structure is necessary. Confirm performance through an agreed test plan rather than relying only on a material label.

2. Compare print quality and shelf presentation

BOPP laminated PP woven bags are commonly evaluated for projects that need detailed images, controlled branding and a smooth retail-facing surface. This can be useful for products displayed in stores or distributed under a consumer brand.

Plain PP woven bags can be appropriate when identification, handling information and cost-controlled presentation are the priorities. The artwork should be reviewed against the actual print process, number of colours, registration requirements and bag geometry.

Send editable artwork, colour references, barcode requirements and the intended viewing panels during quotation. A digital image alone is not enough to approve production colour or print position.

3. Specify protection as a measurable requirement

Avoid asking only whether a bag is “waterproof” or “moisture-proof.” Those words can be interpreted differently. A better request states:

  • the exposure expected during filling, storage and transport;
  • whether the concern is vapour, liquid splash, dust, grease or another substance;
  • whether a separate inner liner is required;
  • the seam and closure conditions;
  • the test method and acceptance criteria, if already defined.

The lamination, woven substrate, liner, seams and closure work as a system. The weakest part of that system can determine the finished result.

4. Match the bag to filling and closing equipment

Bag construction must fit the customer’s process. Share whether filling is manual or automatic, the filling speed, opening style, discharge behaviour and closure method. Also note any requirement for heat sealing, sewing, a valve, an easy-open feature, handles or gussets.

If the bag opening does not match the filling head or the closure does not match the production line, a visually attractive bag can still create operational problems. Buyers who are also planning a filling or bag-making line can review the company’s packaging machinery solutions separately.

5. Define handling and distribution conditions

The quotation should reflect the complete route from filling to the end customer. Tell the supplier about:

  • stacking pattern and pallet dimensions;
  • manual, conveyor or forklift handling;
  • drop, vibration or compression risks;
  • container loading and export transport;
  • warehouse conditions;
  • sharp edges or abrasion points;
  • required sample or production tests.

Do not assume that adding BOPP film automatically increases load strength. Finished performance depends on the complete construction and should be confirmed for the actual use case.

ISO 23560:2015 specifies general characteristics, requirements and test methods for woven PP sacks of 25 kg or 50 kg intended for certain foodstuffs. It is a useful reference when the application falls within that scope, but it should not be presented as a universal specification for every woven bag.

6. Review recycling and market compliance early

Recyclability is not determined by the words “PP” or “BOPP” alone. The complete package—including film, woven substrate, coatings, inks, adhesives, liner, closures and labels—must be assessed against the collection and recycling system in the destination market.

CEFLEX’s Designing for a Circular Economy guidance covers polyolefin-based flexible packaging and can inform design discussions where relevant. For the European Union, Regulation (EU) 2025/40 establishes packaging and packaging-waste requirements. Buyers should confirm the rules, implementation dates and evidence required for the specific product and market with qualified compliance advisers.

Do not print an unsupported recycling claim or symbol merely because the main polymers appear related.

Which option should you choose?

Consider a BOPP laminated construction when:

  • the package needs detailed, high-impact graphics;
  • consistent brand presentation is commercially important;
  • the smoother film surface suits the intended application;
  • the complete laminated structure can meet the project’s protection, filling and market requirements.

Consider a plain PP woven construction when:

  • straightforward product identification is sufficient;
  • the woven appearance is acceptable;
  • the required performance can be achieved without the BOPP print film;
  • the simpler construction is compatible with the filling, closure and distribution plan.

When uncertain, request samples built to a written specification and validate them under representative conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are BOPP laminated PP woven bags waterproof?

Do not treat “BOPP laminated” as a universal waterproof claim. Liquid and moisture performance depends on the complete construction, including lamination, liner, seams, closure and test conditions. State the required exposure and acceptance test.

Is a BOPP laminated bag stronger than a plain PP woven bag?

Not necessarily. Load performance depends on the woven substrate, dimensions, seams, closure and complete finished construction. Compare verified specifications and agreed test results rather than the surface layer alone.

Can plain PP woven bags be printed?

Yes, depending on the selected construction and print process. Share the artwork, print coverage, colour references and viewing panels so feasibility can be reviewed.

Do BOPP laminated bags need an inner liner?

That depends on the packed product and required barrier or containment performance. A liner should be specified when the product and test requirements justify it; it should not be assumed from the outer film alone.

What should I send before requesting samples?

Send the packed product, fill weight, bag dimensions, construction, liner and closure requirements, artwork, filling method, distribution conditions, destination market and proposed test criteria.
